Recreational marijuana is illegal in Burundi. The 2009 Penal Code (Loi N degrees 1/05 du 22 avril 2009 portant revision du Code Penal) and Loi N degrees 1/02 du 5 fevrier 2008 sur la repression du trafic illicite et de la consommation de stupefiants criminalise cultivation, possession, sale, and consumption of cannabis (urumogi).
Penalties range from one to five years' imprisonment for personal-use possession and up to twenty years for trafficking, with fines up to FBu 5,000,000. The Police Nationale du Burundi and the Service National de Renseignement enforce drug offences, and the Office Burundais des Recettes (OBR) interdicts at land borders with Rwanda, Tanzania, and the DRC, and at Melchior Ndadaye International Airport (BJM). There is no medical cannabis programme.

Import and export of cannabis are prohibited. The Office Burundais des Recettes (OBR) and Police Nationale jointly screen at Bujumbura's Melchior Ndadaye International Airport and at the Kobero, Gasenyi, and Mugina border posts. Lake Tanganyika crossings are monitored by the lake police unit.
