Recreational marijuana is illegal in Chad. Law No. 022/PR/2017 of 20 October 2017 on the suppression of trafficking and use of drugs and psychotropic substances classifies cannabis as a stupefiant. Possession for personal use is punishable by one to five years' imprisonment and a fine of XAF 500,000 to XAF 5,000,000; trafficking penalties reach ten to twenty years.
The Office Central de Repression du Trafic Illicite des Stupefiants (OCRTIS-Tchad), under the Direction Generale de la Police Nationale, leads enforcement in N'Djamena, Moundou, and along Lake Chad basin trafficking corridors. The Gendarmerie Nationale handles rural interdiction. Possession at N'Djamena International Airport (NDJ) leads to prosecution; tourists are not exempt. Ongoing instability across the Sahel and Lake Chad basin has not led to relaxed enforcement in the capital.
