Industrial hemp cultivation is legal in Chile under the Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero (SAG) regime, which authorises licensed growers to cultivate Cannabis sativa for industrial fibre and seed production. SAG operates under Decree Law No. 3,557 of 1980 (Agricultural Protection Law) and issues permits on a case-by-case basis specifying variety, hectarage, and end-use. Approved varieties must contain low THC levels, generally aligned with international hemp standards.
Hemp fibre, seed, and seed oil products are permitted as food and consumer goods under standard food safety and customs rules administered by the Ministerio de Salud. The Magistral cannabis programme has expanded farmer participation in cultivation for medical end-use, with SAG and ISP jointly overseeing the seed-to-pharmacy chain. Consumer hemp products are widely available in health-food retailers and supermarkets.
