Recreational marijuana is illegal in the Faroe Islands. As a self-governing nation within the Kingdom of Denmark, the islands apply Danish narcotics legislation: the Euphoriants Act (Lov om euforiserende stoffer, consolidated as LBK No. 1334 of 9 December 2019) and section 191 of the Danish Penal Code (Straffeloven) criminalise the possession, transfer, and trafficking of cannabis. Personal-use possession is prosecuted by fine on a first offence; trafficking is punishable by imprisonment of up to ten years, with aggravated cases reaching sixteen years under section 191.
Enforcement is led by the Faroese police district (Politiet Faeroyene), which reports to the Danish National Police (Rigspolitiet). Customs control is administered by TAKS, the Faroese tax and customs authority, at Vagar Airport (FAE) and the Torshavn passenger port. The Faroe Islands are outside the European Union and the Schengen Area but inside the Nordic Passport Union, and arriving travellers from Denmark and Iceland remain subject to narcotics enforcement on the same basis as Danish nationals.
