Recreational marijuana is illegal in Lesotho. The Drugs of Abuse Act 2008 (Act No. 18 of 2008) classifies cannabis as a prohibited drug under Schedule I. Possession, sale, and use without authorisation are criminal offences, with imprisonment of up to ten years and fines under section 38. Cannabis (locally called matekoane) has been cultivated in the Maloti highlands for generations, but personal recreational use remains unlawful.
The Lesotho Mounted Police Service operates a drug-control unit, and the Lesotho Revenue Authority customs branch enforces interdiction at Moshoeshoe I International Airport (MSU) and at the South African border posts of Maseru Bridge, Caledonspoort, and Maputsoe. Recreational consumption is treated as a criminal offence even where the user holds no commercial interest in the trade.
