Recreational marijuana is illegal in Mauritius. Cannabis (locally gandia) is controlled under the Dangerous Drugs Act 2000 (Act No. 41 of 2000), which lists cannabis, cannabis resin, and tetrahydrocannabinol in Schedule I.
Section 30 punishes possession with a fine of up to 50,000 rupees and imprisonment for up to 8 years; trafficking under Section 41 can lead to penal servitude of up to 25 years and a fine of up to 5,000,000 rupees, with mandatory minimums where weight exceeds 1 kilogram. The Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) of the Mauritius Police Force is the lead enforcement agency, and prosecutions proceed before the Intermediate Court. The 2020 amendments and the Independent Commission Against Corruption have not introduced any decriminalization. The National Drug Control Master Plan 2024-2028 still treats cannabis as fully prohibited.
