Recreational marijuana is illegal in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. Cannabis is controlled under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law (State Law and Order Restoration Council Law No. 1/93), enacted on 27 January 1993, administered by the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control (CCDAC).
Section 16(c) punishes possession with imprisonment of 3 to 5 years, with mandatory treatment ordered regardless of whether dependence is established. Possession of between 2 and 75 grams is treated as possession with intent to sell and triggers harsher sentencing. Section 19 (cultivation) carries a minimum of 5 years and up to 10 years' imprisonment plus fines, while Section 20 (sale, transport, import, or export) carries a minimum of 15 years and may extend to life imprisonment or the death penalty. CCDAC, the Myanmar Police Force Drug Enforcement Division, and Customs Department enforce, though enforcement capacity is uneven amid the ongoing post-2021 political situation.
