Cannabis & Hemp Overview

CBD is legal in Slovakia following the 2023 reform that removed cannabidiol from the narcotic schedule. Cannabidiol products derived from EU-approved industrial hemp varieties with no more than 0.3% THC may be sold as cosmetics, dietary supplements, or licensed medicines depending on claims and form.

The State Institute for Drug Control (Statny ustav pre kontrolu lieciv, SUKL) regulates products with therapeutic claims, while the State Veterinary and Food Administration (SVPS) enforces the EU Novel Food Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 for ingestibles. Topical and cosmetic CBD sells openly in pharmacies and specialty stores. Epidyolex is reimbursed through the General Health Insurance Company (VsZP) for refractory epilepsies.

The 2023 reform also opened a regulated path for cannabidiol-rich medical preparations under specialist prescription. Products exceeding 0.3% THC remain on the narcotic schedule and trigger Criminal Code liability. Sellers marketing unauthorized therapeutic claims face fines up to EUR 35,000 under the Medicines Act.
