Is Weed Legal in Algeria?

Cannabis is illegal for recreational and medical use in Algeria. Loi n. 04-18 du 25 decembre 2004 relative a la prevention et a la repression de l'usage et du trafic illicites de stupefiants et de substances psychotropes is the operative statute, supplemented by the Code Penal. The Office National de Lutte Contre la Drogue et la Toxicomanie (ONLCDT) under the Ministere de la Justice coordinates policy, while the Direction Generale de la Surete Nationale (DGSN) and Gendarmerie Nationale enforce on the ground.

Personal-use possession is punishable under Article 12 by 2 months to 2 years' imprisonment and fines from 5,000 to 50,000 dinars. The court may order treatment instead of incarceration for first-time offenders. Trafficking is graver: Article 17 imposes 10 to 20 years' imprisonment and fines of 5,000,000 to 50,000,000 dinars. Cultivation carries the same trafficking-range penalties.
