CBG

Where it is legal, restricted or banned in every US state we track, with the law behind each status and the latest news on changes.

Federal status

CBG extracted from hemp is covered by the 2018 Farm Bill hemp definition and is not a controlled substance. Starting December 11, 2026, CBG products must contain no more than 0.4 mg total THC per container, and CBG made outside the plant would fall under the new synthesized-cannabinoid exclusion.

Overview

What to know

CBG (cannabigerol) is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid, sometimes called the "mother cannabinoid" because the plant builds THCA and CBDA from its acid form, CBGA. Some hemp cultivars are bred to produce high levels of CBG, and it is sold in oils, capsules and blends, often alongside CBD.

At the federal level, CBG rides on the same hemp definition as CBD. It is not scheduled, and the FDA has not approved it as a food ingredient or supplement.

The federal hemp redefinition matters for CBG in two ways starting December 11, 2026: products must stay under 0.4 mg total THC per container, and cannabinoids synthesized or manufactured outside the plant are excluded from hemp. CBG extracted from hemp and sold in THC-free formulas should not be affected by the THC cap. Check your state's rules on minor cannabinoids.

FAQ

Common questions

Is CBG legal federally?

Yes, when it comes from hemp. Starting December 11, 2026, CBG products must also contain no more than 0.4 mg total THC per container and cannot use CBG synthesized outside the plant.

Does CBG get you high?

No. CBG is considered non-intoxicating, which is part of why it is not the target of the new federal THC limits.

Will CBG be banned with the hemp THC changes?

Not by name. The federal changes target THC and synthesized cannabinoids, so hemp-extracted CBG in a product under the 0.4 mg total-THC cap remains within the hemp definition.
