Recreational marijuana is illegal in Brunei Darussalam. Cannabis is a Class A controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act, Chapter 27, administered by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) of Brunei.
The Misuse of Drugs Act imposes mandatory minimum sentences: trafficking 500 grams or more of cannabis carries the mandatory death penalty under Schedule II. Possession of any amount triggers imprisonment, caning, and substantial fines. Brunei's Syariah Penal Code Order 2013, which entered full force in 2019, adds parallel religious-law penalties for Muslim residents including drug-related offenses. The NCB and Royal Brunei Police Force screen passengers at Brunei International Airport and the Sungai Tujoh border crossing to Sarawak. Even residual amounts found in luggage trigger prosecution.
