Recreational marijuana is illegal in Kiribati. The Dangerous Drugs Act, Cap. 22 of the Laws of Kiribati, classifies cannabis as a prohibited dangerous drug, and the Kiribati Police Service enforces narcotics offenses across the Gilbert, Phoenix, and Line island groups.
Section 4 of the Act criminalizes possession, cultivation, importation, and supply of cannabis. Penalties extend to imprisonment for up to five years or substantial fines, with aggravated trafficking offenses prosecuted under the Penal Code. The remote geography means enforcement focuses on Bonriki International Airport on Tarawa and ports of entry at Betio, where Customs and Border Control screens arriving passengers and freight. No medical cannabis or industrial hemp legislation has been introduced.
