The Maldives Drugs Act (Law No. 17/2011) classifies cannabis as a Schedule 1 drug and prohibits its possession, sale and cultivation, with cultivation punishable by up to 25 years' imprisonment and trafficking by life imprisonment plus heavy fines. Viable cannabis seeds are treated as prohibited drug material with no collector or agricultural exemption. A third amendment passed in December 2025 introduced capital punishment for large-scale smuggling, with a threshold above 350 grams for cannabis.
