Cannabis & Hemp Overview

Industrial hemp is not authorised in Eritrea. The Ministry of Agriculture has no public licensing programme for Cannabis sativa L. cultivation, and the 2015 Penal Code captures all cannabis plant material without a THC carve-out.

Sorghum, barley, and sesame are the principal field crops in the highlands and Gash-Barka region. No commercial hemp acreage exists, and Eritrea is not party to any regional hemp framework. The state-directed economy and the indefinite national service labour system shape all agricultural policy decisions, making any near-term hemp reform unlikely without explicit central authorisation.
