Recreational marijuana is illegal in Kyrgyzstan. Cannabis is listed in Schedule I of the Drug Control Service's narcotics register issued under the Law on Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances and Precursors (1998) and the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic.
Article 267 of the 2021 Criminal Code criminalizes illicit production, acquisition, storage, transport, or sale of narcotic drugs without intent to sell at over 5 grams of cannabis (the threshold for significant amounts under the State Drug Control Service rules), with imprisonment of up to 5 years; with intent to sell or in large amounts, sentences run from 7 to 12 years and from 12 to 20 years for especially large or organized activity. Possession of small amounts below the significant-amount threshold is an administrative offence under Article 109 of the Code of Misdemeanors carrying a fine. The Chuy Valley's wild cannabis remains a long-standing eradication target for the State Service to Combat Drug-Related Crimes and the State Border Service.
