Is Weed Legal in Liberia?

Recreational marijuana is illegal in Liberia. Cannabis is controlled under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act of 2014 (CDSA), administered by the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), which replaced earlier provisions in the Public Health Law (Title 33) and the Penal Law of Liberia.

Cannabis (locally known as dugee or weed) is listed as a Schedule I drug. Section 14.71 sets penalties for unauthorized possession of up to 5 years' imprisonment and a fine; trafficking, manufacturing, and import under Sections 14.72 to 14.75 carry 10 years to life imprisonment depending on weight and aggravating factors. The Drug Enforcement Court was established by the LDEA Act of 2014 to handle prosecutions, and a 2022 amendment elevated drug trafficking above 100 grams to a first-degree felony, removing bail eligibility. Liberia is a party to the 1961 Single Convention and the 1988 UN Convention against Illicit Traffic.
