Recreational marijuana is illegal in Niue. The Misuse of Drugs Act 1975 (Niue), which inherited and adapted New Zealand's pre-2006 framework, prohibits possession, cultivation, and supply of cannabis. Niue is a self-governing state in free association with New Zealand, with its own legislature in Alofi enacting domestic law.
Cannabis is classified under the Act's schedules as a controlled drug. The Niue Police Department enforces narcotics offenses across the single-island jurisdiction, and Niue International Airport at Hanan Field serves as the principal border control point. Penalties under the Act and the Niue Crimes Act include fines and imprisonment. No medical cannabis or industrial hemp legislation has been enacted, and the Government of Niue has not extended New Zealand's 2017 Misuse of Drugs (Medicinal Cannabis) Amendment Act or hemp regulations.
