Recreational marijuana is illegal in Tuvalu. The Illicit Drugs Control Act 1990, drawn from the Tuvaluan inheritance of UK and South Pacific colonial-era drug law, prohibits possession, cultivation, and supply of cannabis, and the Tuvalu Police Force enforces narcotics offenses across the nine atolls.
Penalties under the Illicit Drugs Control Act and related Penal Code provisions extend to imprisonment and fines. The country's small population and remote location, served almost exclusively by Funafuti International Airport, mean enforcement focuses on incoming flights from Fiji's Suva. Tuvalu is a party to the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs and the 1988 UN Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, and no medical cannabis or industrial hemp legislation has been enacted.
