Recreational use, possession, sale, and cultivation of cannabis are criminal offenses, with administrative sanctions for personal-use quantities and criminal penalties for trafficking. The Gendarmerie Corps of Vatican City State enforces public order within the 44-hectare territory, and the Pontifical Swiss Guard provides ceremonial and protective duties. Saint Peter's Square access is controlled, and any contraband encountered at entry points is referred under cooperative arrangements to Italian authorities.
