Cannabis is illegal in Eritrea, with production, sale and possession prohibited for both medicinal and recreational purposes. Under the 2015 Penal Code, simple possession is a Class 1 petty offence carrying six months to one year of imprisonment, while production and trafficking offences attract far more severe penalties. No industrial hemp or seed-certification rules could be verified, so agricultural hemp seed status remains unclear and viable cannabis seed dealing falls under the general prohibition.
