Suriname's narcotics law (Wet Verdovende Middelen 1998) prohibits the production, trade and possession of cannabis, with penalties scaling by quantity and role. In October 2022 the National Assembly unanimously passed the Industrial Hemp Cultivation Law, amending the drug law to permit licensed hemp of up to 1% THC under the National Institute for Industrial Hemp Cultivation Suriname (NIIHS), largely for export. Outside that licensing regime, viable cannabis seeds remain illegal to sell, buy or transfer.
